Throwback Thursday: Fiddling Around...
Forty-nine years ago, tomorrow...
For some reason, U.S. journalists tend to obsess over anniversaries. We just can’t get enough of them.
We just love starting a story with, “Forty-nine years ago, tomorrow…”
I mention U.S. journalists specifically, because this doesn’t seem to be a universal thing.
When I was a correspondent overseas, I ran into instances where American reporters tried to do a story about the anniversary of a major regional event, only to be met with surprise and bafflement from the very people involved in the original thing. To them, it was just another day.
Having said that…
Forty-nine years ago tomorrow, on June 26, 1977, Elvis Presley gave his final concert.
It was here, in Indianapolis. That’s a fact.
I wasn’t at the concert. I never even saw Elvis perform live. I never set foot in the venue where they held the last concert.
That building was demolished in 2001, but there is now a commemorative plaque, so at least there’s that.
Appropriately, the plaque’s inscription begins with:
“Ladies and gentlemen, Elvis has left the building.”
Today’s Throwback Thursday retread brings back a 5 a.m. Story from two years ago, which mentioned this last concert. Mind you, it’s only there in one paragraph, so be on the lookout.
Well, I think it’s worth reading, anyway.
Please enjoy Tune up your Strad, Brad!
