Throwback Thursday: Bye, Bye, Miss American Pi
How can we square this circle?.

Today’s Throwback Thursday rerun, Bye, Bye, Miss American Pi, is about an event that happened in 1897. I first read about it years ago, in an airline magazine on my way to someplace. It seemed too good to be true, so I figured it was just poorly researched folklore.
Then I researched it myself, in 19th century newspapers, and found out it really happened.
It’s about a time when the Indiana Legislature did something incredibly stupid.
To be more specific, they decided to go up against science, and remember, this was long before the MAGA folks made doing that perfectly acceptable.
If you live in Indiana, you already know stupid stuff is a time-honored tradition in our Legislature. You may remember my recent story called More Fork Barrel Politics? about efforts to declare the pork tenderloin the official state sandwich. As an update, that bill passed the Senate but died in committee in the House, so for the time being, Hoosiers are rudderless, sandwich-wise.
I hope you enjoy Bye, Bye, Miss American Pi. Oh, and be sure to savor the part about the French restaurant legislation. Only in Indiana.
