These are tough times, about to get tougher.

One of the consequences of the Recent National Tragedy is that it is now a lot harder to make people laugh. I write what I like to think are humorous stories, but my reservoir of mirth has been sucked just about bone dry.

I was commiserating with a neighbor this week as we walked our dogs, and she said, “Well, at least we’re not living in Palestine.” She had a point. Still, if we have to compare our own lot with life in Gaza to feel better, then I guess things are not going too well here.

I came home from that walk and tried to remember things that have made me smile in recent weeks. One event immediately came to mind, and I smiled again just thinking about it. Every single word of this story is true.
