Hey, Bob, it’s me, your Typical Reader. I thought I could help with your mid-week update, if that’s okay.
Um, sure. What’s on your mind?
You claim you live in Indianapolis. I wonder why we haven’t seen you with any race car drivers, then?
Check out this photo, above, taken last Sunday. The guy with the hat is Al Unser, Jr. He’s won the Indianapolis 500 twice. The guy in the green shirt is me.
Wow! That’s very cool!
You bet it is! Al Unser, Junior’s dad won the 500 four times, and his uncle won it three times. Unsers have won the race nine times.
Incredible! So, what was his dad’s name?
I don’t think I’m going to answer that.
What was he doing with you?
It was a holiday party for friends of the Grateful Rescue and Sanctuary, a wonderful animal welfare group. Al is a big Grateful supporter, and so are we.
Sounds like this was a good week for you. Was there anything else?
Yes, the Substack people tell me I got subscribers in two new states, Oklahoma and South Dakota. So, it’s getting harder to avoid me.
You must be positively giddy.
Yes, and here’s the icing on the cake. Julia Whitehead, the founder and executive director of the very, very cool Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library, surprised me by sharing my most recent piece and saying incredibly sweet things about my “5 a.m. Stories.” I feel like I’ve already had my Christmas:
Somehow appropriate that Bob does well with animals.
Jimmy Durante sang “Isn’t it a shame that Christmas comes but once a year” - wouldn’t it be nice if it came around twice spreading joy and good cheer.
Caring for animals makes it Christmas every day for them. Good work, Bob!
We are so proud to have you on our Board of Directors, Bob! You have a wealth of knowledge with a great desire and passion for animal welfare and the commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with us as we watch this organization to grow to great heights! We appreciate you so much. Thank you!
